Shortlisted artwork proposals of public art scheme for Tseung Kwan O Town Park now on display
*******************************************************

The first stage of adjudication for preliminary proposals in the "Public Art Scheme of the Town Park, Indoor Velodrome-cum-Sports Centre in Area 45, Tseung Kwan O" was completed in early August. To give the public a better understanding of the scheme, which is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, as well as insight into the design concepts of the 12 models of the shortlisted proposals, an exhibition is currently on display at the lobby of the secondary sports ground at Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground and will run until December 1.

Organised by the Art Promotion Office (APO) in partnership with the Architectural Services Department, the scheme was launched in January this year with the aims of embellishing the Town Park and highlighting the sporting culture at the venue, which will be completed in 2013, through the installation of outdoor public artworks with a sporting theme.

With sport as their theme, the artworks are expected to enhance the development of a sporting culture. They not only have to be innovative and aesthetically pleasing, but also have to express the fun of sports and arouse public interest in sports. The 12 artwork models on display at Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground are grouped into two categories. They are those suitable for placing at a wall facing the amphitheatre ("Run!", "Pass On" and "Dynamic Athletes") and those suitable for planters next to the artificial lakes as well as the grand lawn ("Motionscape", "Chain of Playing Sport", "Striding Across", "Five Rings Cycling", "Wind Rider", "Time Space Continuum", "The Wheels", "Homeward Bound" and "The Picnic").

Participating artists and art teams have adopted various media and presentation forms in their creations. Many of the artists have planned to use environmentally friendly materials and energy conservation devices for artwork production and installation. In addition, most of the selected artists have illustrated their artworks with a barrier-free setting that would enable full appreciation and interaction with members of the public from a diverse range of ages and backgrounds.

Also, there will be a "My Favourite" activity in the exhibition for collection of visitors' impressions and comments on the selected artworks.

The second stage of adjudication, which will assess the detailed proposals, will be held in December this year. The adjudication panel will select at most four proposals. The artists or the art teams of the selected proposals may be recommended for commissioning and installation of the artworks.

A town park and an international competition-standard indoor velodrome and sports centre are being built at the junction of Po Hong Road and Wan Po Road in Tseung Kwan O, Sai Kung District, and will occupy an area of about 6.9 hectares. The velodrome will be the first of its kind in Hong Kong and will provide a venue for top-level cycling training and international competitions as well as serve as a multi-purpose facility suitable for various indoor sports. To help improve the adjacent environment, some green features with energy conservation measures have been designed and adopted for the site. Upon completion, the site will be a landmark in Tseung Kwan O.

Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground, where the exhibition is being held, is situated at 109 Po Hong Road, Tseung Kwan O. The opening hours are from 6.30am to 10.30pm daily. Admission is free.
