More than 600 secondary and primary school students gathered at the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park Sports Centre today (October 28) to show off their talents and vie for the awards at the first ever 18 Districts Cheering Team Competition.

As one of the major territory-wide youth programmes organised by the Youth Programme Co-ordinating Committee (YPCC) this year, the competition aims to foster team building and co-operation as well as develop a spirit of perseverance and positive values among young people. The competition was organised by the YPCC under the Commission on Youth (COY), and co-organised by the Home Affairs Department and the District Youth Programme Committees of the 18 districts.

The Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Raymond Young; the Director of Home Affairs, Mrs Pamela Tan; the Chairman of the COY, Mr Bunny Chan, and Convenor of the YPCC, Mr David Yip, officiated at the ceremony and presented awards to the winning teams.

Addressing the participants, Mr Chan said the YPCC has been promoting the core values of youth development through diverse activities including cohesiveness, creativity, leadership, vision and life enrichment.

He added that by participating in healthy activities, teenagers could broaden their horizons, develop their talents, acquire more skills, make more friends and build up confidence and positive values, which are also the missions of the COY in promoting youth development activities.

The competition adopted a district-based format, with one secondary school team and one primary school team coming from each of the 18 districts. Apart from gold, silver, bronze and merit awards, the participants also vied for the best slogan, most courageous and best costume awards.
