****************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Road Safety Council:

The Road Safety Council Annual Ceremony 2012 was held by the Road Safety Council (RSC) today (October 27).

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of the RSC and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Mr Xavier Tang, said that the RSC would continue to promote four main themes, namely anti-drink driving, anti-drug driving, cycling safety and elderly pedestrian safety. Several series of educational and publicity activities have been held by the Council this year to promote the four main themes and to enhance the road safety awareness of the public.

The Council co-operates with different government departments, community organisations and professional associations to improve road infrastructure and facilities, amend the law, enhance law enforcement as well as organise publicity and educational activities. With co-operation among various parties, the number of traffic accidents in the first nine months of 2012 has dropped compared with the same period last year. In particular, the number of fatalities has decreased by 13 per cent from 94 in the first nine months of 2011 to 82 in the same period this year.

Mr Tang thanked the members of the Council and its partners for their contributions and support. He said he hoped that concerted efforts will be made continuously to move towards the vision of "Zero accidents on the road, Hong Kong's goal".

The Chairman of the Road Safety Campaign Committee, Dr Eric Cheng; the Principal Assistant Secretary for Transport and Housing, Miss Erica Ng; and the Assistant Commissioner for Transport, Mr Leung Tak-fai, also officiated at the ceremony.
