Star-studded show to pay tribute to Cantonese opera legend Pak Kui-wing
***********************************************************

An array of acclaimed Cantonese opera veterans will take part in a showcase in December performing masterpieces of the Cantonese opera icon Pak Kui-wing.

The performance will be held at 7.30pm on December 5 (Wednesday) at the Theatre of Ko Shan Theatre. The programme will include Pak's classic operatic songs "A Wanderer's Autumn Grief", "Lovers' Pledge at the Palace of Longevity", "Invitation to Spend the Night" from "The Kharma of Love", "Going to the Capital with Her Pipa in Hand" and "The Wronged Wife", as well as the operatic excerpts "Teasing the Mayor" from "In Search of a Suitable Son-in-Law" and "Releasing the Sons" from "The Magic Lotus Lantern".

The cast will include Bai Xuemei, Bai Xuehong, Yuen Siu-fai, Ng Chin-fung, Li Fung, Nam Fung, Liang Yaoan, Peng Chiquan and Sun Kim-long.

Dubbed the "supreme divo", Pak Kui-wing was a Cantonese opera legend in the 1930s. He was known for his impressive panache, vivid acting and the unique personae of scholar and emperor roles. He had an idiosyncratic style created by replacing the falsetto voice with the natural voice, and developed new vocalising techniques and beat patterns. His stylistic school shared popularity with those of his two famous contemporaries, Sit Kok-sin and Ma Sze-tsang, in Cantonese opera.
