HK Film Archive's "Early Treasures" celebrates UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (with photo)
************************************************************

Preserving Hong Kong's cinematic heritage is a major goal of the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA). In support of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, the HKFA will present one of the Archive's prized titles, "The Valiant Ones" (1975), directed by King Hu.

The "Early Treasures" programme will be held at the Cinema of the HKFA at 2pm on October 27 (Saturday) and is dedicated to saving our fading cinematic heritage.

The audiovisual heritage comprises all forms of moving image and recorded sounds, including film. In 2005, the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) designated October 27 of every year as World Day for Audiovisual Heritage to raise awareness of audiovisual documents as an integral part of national identity and to highlight the fragility of these documents and the urgent need to protect them.

"The Valiant Ones" was donated to the HKFA by director Hu in 1996. Some images were affected by scratches and restored using digital techniques. This screening will show a brand new copy that went through a wet-gate printing process that reduces the effect of scratches on the images. The printing of this new copy was sponsored by Mr Raymond Chow.

In "The Valiant Ones", Hu applies an aesthetic treatment by using location shots around Hong Kong's deserted islands and countryside. The tragic plot focuses on Ming Dynasty officials sent to eliminate piracy and reveals treachery, cunning traps and tricky scheming. The film carries the classic signature of King Hu, with martial arts choreography creatively deployed and editing skills showing jump cuts, the rhythmic portrayal of action, Cantonese opera drum effects and unusual camera perspectives.

The film is in Mandarin with English and Chinese subtitles.
