Territory-wide campaign to promote pedestrian safety
****************************************************

Police concluded a one-week territory-wide pedestrian safety campaign yesterday (October 9).  Through education, publicity and stringent enforcement actions, pedestrians, in particular the elderly, were reminded of the importance of road safety.

A total of 275 verbal warnings and 1 240 summonses were issued to pedestrians during the campaign conducted from October 3 to 9.

During the period, Police issued 835 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 200 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge/pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge/pedestrian subway, 83 summonses for failing to comply with prescribed traffic signs, 55 summonses for climbing over/through kerbside fence/central reservation to a carriageway, and 48 summonses for crossing within 15 metres of a light signal crossing other than at the crossing.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams had distributed over 10 500 publicity leaflets at 272 locations across the territory and appealed to the public to comply with road safety regulations.

"Pedestrians are reminded to take care and to cross the road safely.  Those who fail to comply with the law may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000", a Police spokesman said.
