Hong Kong students score outstanding results at China Western Mathematical Invitation 2012 (with photo)

     Eight secondary students representing Hong Kong excelled in winning one gold medal, three silver medals and four bronze medals at the China Western Mathematical Invitation 2012.

     Secondary Four student Lau Chun-ting of St Paul's Co-educational College was the winner of the gold medal, while the silver medallists were Secondary Five student Hui Pak-nam of La Salle College, Secondary Five student Wong Sze-nga of Diocesan Girls' School and Secondary Five student Cheung Ka-wai of Munsang College (Hong Kong Island). The bronze medallists were Secondary Four student Chong Hip-kuen of Queen's College, Secondary Four student Tang Dik-man of La Salle College, Secondary Five student Fung Kin-yiu of King's College and Secondary Five student Lo Wai-kit of Diocesan Boys' School.

     A spokesman for the Education Bureau (EDB) said today (October 4), "The eight students were selected to represent Hong Kong after attending three phases of the mathematics enrichment programme offered by the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education and the International Mathematical Olympiad Hong Kong Committee. The delegates' trip was funded by the EDB."

     The event, organised by the China Western Mathematical Invitation Committee, was held from September 26 to October 1 at Hohhot in Inner Mongolia. It aimed to promote mathematics education, foster companionship among fellow mathematicians and nurture mathematically gifted young people.

     A total of 95 persons participated in the competition, comprising 18 teams from provinces, cities or regions on the Mainland, and one team each from Hong Kong, Mongolia, Singapore, Indonesia and Tajikistan.
