More new datasets on public sector information portal for value-added re-use
**********************************************************

The Government's public sector information (PSI) portal, Data. One (Data.One.gov.hk), today (September 27) launched three new datasets for free download and value-added re-use by the public.

The new datasets cover the 2011 Population Census results, various licences issued by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, and beach water quality.

"These data concern different facets of people's daily life. The public will find them useful for the development of applications as well as research and analysis," a spokesman for the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer said.

The Government rolled out the Data. One portal in March 2011 and has been progressively making available more datasets and strengthening functionalities. Apart from the new datasets mentioned above, the portal already provides traffic data, geo-referenced public facilities data, weather data, air pollution indices and information on approved charitable fund-raising activities for free download and re-use. The data are presented in computer-readable formats and can be flexibly manipulated for different applications, such as developing mobile applications.

"Through opening up PSI, we aim to tap community wisdom to process or mesh different types of data so as to come up with innovative products and services, bringing convenience to the public. PSI creates business opportunities and spurs growth of the information and communications technology industries," the spokesman said.

Download of PSI on the Data. One portal is on the rise. The data is widely used and many ingenious applications have been developed. For example, some mobile applications provide personalised services. When users have customised their usual travelling routes, the apps will automatically display relevant real-time traffic condition, enabling users to adjust their routes if necessary.

"We will continue to put more datasets on the portal and welcome suggestions on new datasets," the spokesman added.
