Following is a transcript of remarks by the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, on waste management issues after visiting Ma On Shan Ling Liang Primary School today (September 21):
Reporter: With the landfills filling up, what are your plans to deal with this issue?
Secretary for the Environment: In Hong Kong, the food waste is one of the major ingredients in landfills, occupying about 40 per cent of the landfilled waste. So we have to map out a holistic strategy to tackle food waste. The plan is that we have to tackle different sectors one by one, because there is about one-third of waste from the commercial and industrial sector, while the rest is from the residential sector. So we need to work with different stakeholders to map out the corresponding strategies to reduce food waste. Thank you.
