World-class Wells Cathedral Choir to make HK debut in October
******************************************************

Boasting an amazingly long history of over 1,100 years, the world-class Wells Cathedral Choir from the United Kingdom will perform in Hong Kong for the first time in October.

Regarded by Gramophone Magazine's international jury as the world's sixth best choir and the highest ranking choir with children, the choir will perform Mozart's "Gloria" and "Agnus Dei" (from "Coronation Mass"), Rachmaninov's "Nunc dimittis", Walton's "Coronation Te Deum", Whitacre's "Lux aurumque", Parry's "I was Glad" and Chilcott's "Jesus, springing" and "Requiem".

Boys first sang at Wells Cathedral in the year 909 and the cathedral's full choral tradition dates back over 800 years. In 1994 the choral foundation at Wells was enriched by the addition of girl choristers. The choir sings a wide repertoire of music ranging from the masterpieces of the Renaissance period to the finest choral works of the present day. In recent years, the choir has also collaborated with other eminent arts groups for choral works on a larger scale, including The King's Consort, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Jools Holland and his band and the Wells Cathedral Oratorio Society. The choir has also toured extensively both in the UK and abroad. On a recent tour to Paris, the choir gave three concerts and sang "Mass" to over 3,000 people in the Notre Dame Cathedral.

The concert by Wells Cathedral Choir is one of the "Great Music" programmes presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be held at 8pm on October 30 (Tuesday) at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall. Tickets priced at $120, $200 and $300 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for the "Great Music" booking package.

Other programmes of the "Great Music" include "Gidon Kremer and Kremerata Baltica", "The English Concert", "Piano Recital by Krystian Zimerman" and "Piano Recital by Piotr Anderszewski".
