As part of the programme "Europe Meets China, A Forum for Young Leaders (EMC)", the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Berlin (HKETO Berlin) hosted the visit of 28 "Young Leaders" from 17 countries today (September 5) in the Hong Kong Hall.

EMC is a network of students and young professionals who have an interest in exploring and strengthening the relations between Europe and China.  The programme had been developed by the not-for-profit non-governmental Institute for Cultural Diplomacy (ICD) to promote and support diplomatic relations between Germany and China.  The major objectives of the ICD are to extend current research and practices in the field of cultural diplomacy and create a platform to promote and sustain inter-cultural dialogue at all levels.

In his lecture, the Director of HKETO Berlin, Mr Ivan Lee, introduced Hong Kong's unique constitutional set-up under the "One Country, Two Systems" principle and its advantages as the gateway to China. "With its strategic location at the doorway to Mainland China and in a time zone that bridges the gap between Asia and Europe, Hong Kong offers tremendous opportunities for companies wishing to explore the ever growing Greater China market," Mr Lee explained. "Since our reunification with China, Hong Kong remains the world's freest and most competitive economy, offering one of the most vibrant and friendly business environments as well as excellent infrastructure and quality of life," he added.

Referring to the deepening co-operation between Hong Kong and China, Mr Lee particularly highlighted the advantages of the Mainland and Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement(CEPA) to European companies and institutions: "CEPA offers favourable trading and investment conditions to Hong Kong-based companies - local or foreign owned - interested in exporting goods, trading services and investment facilitation."

Following the lecture the young students and professionals addressed questions to Mr Lee and a vivid discussion about Hong Kong's role as the gateway to China developed.
