The Opus One Piano Trio's Warren Lee (piano), Wong Sze-hang (violin) and Richard Bamping (cello) will collaborate with clarinettist Andrew Simon for a concert in October.
To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of the French composer Claude Debussy, the trio will perform Debussy's "Piano Trio in G" and join Simon to perform "Premier Rhapsody for Piano and Clarinet" and "Petite Pièce for Piano and Clarinet". They will also perform Mozart's "Piano Trio in G, K564" and Brahms' "Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano in A Minor".
Founded in 2001 by Warren Lee, Dennis Kim and Richard Bamping, the Opus One Piano Trio made its debut in the Hong Kong City Hall in the same year, and since then they have made a number of recital appearances in Hong Kong to meet popular demand. Over the years, the trio has made several recordings for RTHK Radio 4 and collaborated with other eminent musicians. The trio even took part in a crossover project when it recorded an unplugged pop ballad with Hacken Lee for his "Victory" album (2002). In 2011, violinist Wong Sze-hang joined the trio.
A graduate of the Juilliard School, Andrew Simon is the principal clarinet of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. He made his Australian concerto debut under Marin Alsop in 2000, performing the Australian premiere of the original version of Aaron Copland's "Clarinet Concerto". Simon serves on the faculties of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Baptist University. As a guest lecturer, he frequents institutions such as Yale University, the Sydney Conservatorium, the Royal College of Music (London) and the Central Conservatory (Beijing).
"Concert by Opus One Piano Trio" is part of the Debussy Year celebration programme presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be held at 8pm on October 3 (Wednesday) at the Theatre, Hong Kong City Hall. Tickets priced at $110 and $160 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 25 per cent is offered for the "Our Music Talents" booking package.
