Lectures by Chan Siu-kwan to explore the music of Debussy
*********************************************************

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Music Lecture Series "Discover Debussy" (conducted in Cantonese) will be held in October as part of celebrations to mark Debussy Year. Soprano Chan Siu-kwan will share her knowledge on the famous French composer Claude Debussy at the lectures.

Debussy was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Over the past century, his music has had a particularly strong influence on all composers and on the development of Western music. Besides exploring Debussy's life and his special position in the history of Western music, speaker Chan Siu-kwan will also introduce to audiences some major works by Debussy from different stages in his career. Soprano Amanda Li will join in some demonstrations in the second lecture about Debussy's enchanting songs, which are relatively less often performed.

Chan Siu-kwan, the vocal advisor in residence at the Hong Kong Children's Choir, teaches singing at the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Baptist University. She furthered her study at Glasgow University and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music after graduating from the Hong Kong Baptist College. Her major teachers have included Mak Chi-shing, David Parker, Bill McCue and Heather Harper. She has given numerous recitals and has performed as a soloist in concerts in Hong Kong and abroad. On top of singing, she is a fervent music promoter; she gives numerous talks and lectures on the appreciation of opera and vocal music, and adjudicates for local and overseas vocal and choral contests, especially those serving the younger generation.
