The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, today (August 21) presented commendation certificates and medals to 98 people for their distinguished contribution to community building and social services.
At the presentation ceremony for the Secretary for Home Affairs' Commendation Scheme, Mr Tsang commended the award recipients for their contribution to community building, charity work and building management as well as their services for the elderly, women and ethnic minorities. He said they have joined hands with the SAR Government in promoting the spirit of social integration and mutual caring, contributing to the building of a better community.
"The well-being of the community is always kept in the mind of the Government. Through reaching out to the community to understand people's sentiments and opinions, we will continue to try our best to adhere to the 'people-based' principle.
"Building a harmonious, stable, prosperous and progressive society needs the full participation of people from various sectors. I am grateful to you all for your support for our work," Mr Tsang said.
Mr Tsang pointed out that strengthening district work was one of the priorities of the administration. Through the allocation of resources and implementation of various policies, together with the District Councils, the Government will do its utmost to strengthen district work. He said the Government would also work hard to consolidate district views so as to improve the environment and people's quality of living as well as tackle different livelihood issues.
The Secretary for Home Affairs' Commendation Scheme, introduced in 2002, aims to recognise individuals who make outstanding contributions to community building, social services and the development of sports, culture and arts. More than 1,500 people have been awarded certificates and medals of commendation in the past decade.
