Man and company fined for illegal club operations
*************************************************

A man and a company were fined $4,000 and $6,500 respectively at the Eastern Magistrates' Courts today (August 21) for contravening the Clubs (Safety of Premises) Ordinance.

The courts heard that the Office of the Licensing Authority (OLA) of Home Affairs Department conducted inspections on two clubs operating with certificates of compliance (CoCs) on Stanley Street, Central, in February this year.

In the first case, OLA officers posed as customers and patronised the club for food without being asked to show their membership status or being invited to join the club. The male CoC holder was charged with contravening the Ordinance.

In the second case, apart from serving non-members, the club staff failed to show the membership registers upon OLA officers' request, and could not display or show the CoC. The company, being the CoC holder, was charged with contravening the Ordinance.

A spokesman for the department reminded all the CoC holders to comply with the conditions as stipulated therein. Enforcement action will continue to be taken against illegal club operations.
