Duo arrested for election corruption and conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm

     Police today (August 13) arrested two men, aged 44 and 36, for violating Elections (Corrupt and Illegal Conduct) Ordinance and conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm at Shenzhen Bay Port.

     A 51-year-old local male was wounded by corrosive fluid in July 2010 in Shenzhen area. The man later returned to Hong Kong for medical treatment and made a report to Police.

     Regional Anti-Triad Unit of New Territories North took over the case. After in-depth investigations, Police believed the case was in connection with the village representative elections in 2011. The officers today arrested those two men, who were returning to Hong Kong from Mainland, at Shenzhen Bay Port.    

     Two arrested persons will be charged later and appear at Fanling Magistracy Court tomorrow (August 14).     
     
     According to Section 8, Elections (Corrupt and Illegal Conduct) Ordinance, Cap 554, any person uses force or duress, or threatens to use force or duress, against another person to induce the other person to stand, or not to stand, as a candidate at the election, regardless the act is taken place in HK or outside HK, is considered to engage in corrupt conduct at an election. The maximum penalties of this offence is fined of $500000 and sentenced to imprisonment for seven years.
