Man holding charged with theft
******************************

     Police today (August 4) laid a holding charge against a 21-year-old man with one count of theft, and he will appear before Eastern Magistrates' Courts on August 6.

     Officers of Commercial Crime Bureau arrested the man at a restaurant in Central on August 2. A mobile phone and a bill payment of the restaurant were found in his possessions. Forty-eight sets of suspected stolen credit card data were stored in the phone. Subsequent search at his residence in Cheung Sha Wan led to the seizure of a notebook computer and some e-receipts for purchase with the suspected stolen credit card data.

     After investigations, the man was believed to have dishonestly obtained credit card data from customers at the restaurant and used the data to make online transactions totalled $820,000 in July this year.

     Police appeal to the public to properly protect their credit card data with the following advice:

- Request shop staff to conduct transaction with credit card or payment card in front of you;
- Stay vigilant and keep your credit cards in a safe place;
- After paying bills with credit card, make sure you have been returned your own credit card;
- Destroy bank letters containing credit card data and customer copies of card payment before disposal; and
- Check your bank statements against any abnormal transaction. Inform your card-issuing bank at once of any suspicious transaction or not receiving regular bank documents.
