The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, and the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, together with Non-official Members of the Executive Council and members of the Preparatory Task Force on the Commission on Poverty, met with representatives of the Vocational Training Council, the Employees Retraining Board and the Construction Industry Training Board this afternoon (July 30) to solicit their views on vocational training and the employment market.
Mrs Lam said, "Employment is an important livelihood issue for the public, especially at the grass-roots level. The fourth-term Government attaches great importance to the measures on increasing employment opportunities, and to stepping up education and training for young people and the working population. We will strive to enhance the quality of vocational training for helping participants to develop their careers. Through this, we can work to implement the vision for increasing opportunities for people's upward mobility and providing better employment opportunities for the grass roots, which was put forward by the Chief Executive in his manifesto."
During the meeting, the representatives of the training institutes introduced their pre-employment training and on-the-job training programmes, the present situation and the outlook of the job market, as well as the backgrounds and needs of their participants. They also expressed their views on the Government's education and vocational training arrangements, how to further support the initiatives on vocational training, how to improve the employment competitiveness of young people and grass-roots workers, and also the qualifications framework for the community at large.
