39 Under Secretary candidates enter next stage of selection process
************************************************************

Chaired by the Chief Executive-elect (CE-elect), Mr C Y Leung, the selection committee for the posts of Under Secretaries and Political Assistants conducted its first round of selection today (June 11). Out of about 300 Under Secretary applications, 39 candidates were selected to enter the coming round of meetings.

"The selection committee focused today on the high-quality applicants for the posts of Under Secretaries. The selection criteria include the applicants' experience in public service, their professional and academic qualifications, their vision and whether the applicants would complement the relevant Directors of Bureau," a spokesman for the CE-elect's Office (CEEO) said.

"The selection process is very stringent. All the 39 selected applicants received at least three votes from the four selection committee members. The Head of the CEEO, Mrs Fanny Law Fan Chiu-fun, was absent owing to her need to attend a Legislative Council meeting."

The selected candidates are due to meet the selection committee on June 13, 14, 16, 17 and 19. The meetings will be chaired by either the CE-elect or the Head of the CEEO, and at least two non-official members of the selection committee.

The candidates will be further shortlisted. After the appointments of the Principal Officials are announced, relevant Secretaries of Department, Deputy Secretaries of Department and Directors of Bureau will take part in the next round of selection in order to put the team together.

The selection committee is chaired by the CE-elect. Members comprise the former Chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, Mr Anthony Wu Ting-yuk; the Deputy Chairman of the Council of Lingnan University, Ms Sophia Kao Ching-chi; the Chairman of the Kwun Tong District Council, Mr Bunny Chan Chung-bun; and Mrs Law.

About 1 100 applications were received following the appeal by the CE-elect for talents who are interested in joining the political team of the next-term Government as Under Secretaries or Political Assistants. The selection process for the posts of Political Assistants will be conducted later.
