************************************************

The popular use of digital maps on the Internet and location-based smartphone applications such as Google Maps, Microsoft Bing Maps and GeoInfo Map by the Lands Department of Hong Kong has generated increasing interest in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. How can GIS technology best be used to improve map analysis and enhance the user's geographic awareness? In what ways can GIS reinforce geographic relationships and develop global awareness?

The Hong Kong Public Libraries of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will hold a seminar entitled "Use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)" from 3pm to 4.30pm on June 17 (Sunday) at the Lecture Theatre of the Hong Kong Central Library for members of the public to gain a better understanding of the use of GIS. The seminar will be conducted in Cantonese with free admission on a first-come, first-served basis.

Associate Professor of the Department of Geography at the University of Hong Kong Dr P C Lai will showcase examples GIS usage covering issues such as global warming, agricultural development, disaster management and public health.

With specialisations in digital and geographic information systems and environmental health, Dr Lai is currently the Honorary Deputy Director of the Geographical/Land Information System Research Centre at the University of Hong Kong. She was formerly affiliated with the Department of Geodetic Science and Surveying at Ohio State University and also the Department of Geography at the University of Maryland.
