The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, today (May 14) visited Sendai, Japan to see the damage done by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, learn more about the recovery progress and meet with the Governor of Miyagi Prefecture.
On the morning of the second day of his visit to Japan, Mr So first called on the Governor of Miyagi Prefecture, Mr Yoshihiro Murai. He conveyed Hong Kong people's greetings to the people of the prefecture, who suffered from the great earthquake and tsunami last year. He was glad to see that the people of the Miyagi Prefecture have gradually resumed a normal life. In return, Mr Murai expressed his gratitude for the generosity and kindness of Hong Kong people in supporting those affected.
Later on, Mr So visited Nakano Elementary School, which was badly damaged by the tsunami. He then went to Nakano Sakae Elementary School, where 86 students of Nakano Elementary School are temporarily housed for study. Mr So was treated to an energetic Japanese drum performance by the students. Mr So said that with their good spirit and courage they would be a strong force for the country's speedy and solid recovery.
Tomorrow (May 15) Mr So will deliver keynote speeches at the "Think Global, Think Hong Kong" Symposium organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the Creative Asia Forum, which was launched by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Tokyo. He will also visit the "Tian Tian Xiang Shang" exhibition, an exchange project showcasing creative pieces by designers and students of Japan and Hong Kong. In addition, he will attend a luncheon held by the Japan-Hong Kong Parliamentarian League.
