Drivers reminded of idling engine prohibition (with photos)
***********************************************************

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) has reminded motorists to observe the Motor Vehicle Idling (Fixed Penalty) Ordinance ("the Ordinance") by switching off the engines of stationary vehicles in order to help reduce environmental nuisance and improve roadside air quality.

The Ordinance, which came into effect on December 15, 2011, prohibits drivers from idling a vehicle engine for more than three minutes in any 60-minute period. Law enforcement staff, including Environmental Protection Inspectors and Traffic Wardens, will issue a Penalty Notice to drivers contravening the Ordinance and a fine of $320 will be imposed. This law is in force all year round on all roads including private roads and car parks.

"As the summer is approaching, we have stepped up our ongoing publicity and enforcement activities to remind drivers to observe the law," a spokesman for the EPD said today (May 8).

"Staff of the EPD will continue to distribute leaflets to enhance motorists' awareness of the requirement, and Environmental Protection Inspectors and Traffic Wardens will work together to take enforcement action," the spokesman added.

He called on motorists to improve their green driving habits by switching off their idling engines.

As part of the publicity and educational programmes, the EPD will also stage outdoor roving exhibitions between May and June. Details of the exhibitions in May are listed below.
