Fact sheets for District Council districts of the 2011 Population Census released

     According to the results of the 2011 Population Census, Islands District had the largest proportion of persons having internally migrated with 17.3% of the population aged 5 and over living in another area in Hong Kong five years ago.  It was followed by Wan Chai District (16.6%) and Yuen Long District (16.3%).  On the other hand, Tuen Mun District (8.6%), Eastern District (9.5%) and Wong Tai Sin District (9.6%) were the districts with relatively smaller proportion in this aspect (Table 1).

     In 2011, 36.2% of the working population living in Central and Western District had a place of work in the same area of their residence.  This proportion was the highest among the District Council districts.  On the contrary, less than 10% of the working population in Sai Kung District and Yuen Long District worked in the area of their residence (Table 2).

     Yuen Long District and Sai Kung District were also the two districts with smaller proportion of persons attending full-time courses in educational institutions in Hong Kong with place of study same as that of their residence, at 48.8% and 49.7% respectively.  Among the District Council districts, Tuen Mun District had the largest proportion with 76.3% of the full-time students studying in the area of their residence (Table 3).

     More detailed results of the 2011 Population Census by district can be found in the fact sheets for District Council districts released by the Census and Statistics Department today (April 30).  Each fact sheet provides statistical information on the demographic, educational, economic and internal migration characteristics of the population in the District Council district concerned as well as their household and housing characteristics.  The fact sheets and the map showing the geographical boundaries of the District Council districts are available for downloading free-of-charge from the website of the 2011 Population Census (www.census2011.gov.hk/en/district-profiles.html).

     Fact sheets for smaller geographical areas including Constituency Areas and Tertiary Planning Units and those for major housing estates will be released in stages and they will be made available for free downloading on the website of the 2011 Population Census later this year.
