The traditional Bun Scrambling Competition, one of the key highlights of the Cheung Chau Jiao Festival, was concluded successfully early this morning (April 29). The festive competition, held at the soccer pitch of Pak Tai Temple Playground, Cheung Chau, saw the male and female championships take place around midnight.
To celebrate the successful inscription of the Cheung Chau Jiao Festival onto the Third National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2011, this year's champion, first runner-up and second runner-up in the men's team event, the champion in the women's team event, and the winning team in the Bun Scrambling Invitation Relay, which was held immediately after the individual competition, were awarded trophies named in honour of the inscription.
Divided into three zones, the 14-metre-tall bun tower was studded with about 9,000 buns from top to bottom, with each bun carrying a score of nine, three and one respectively in each zone. Words in different colours were printed on the bottom of the buns for identification. The contestants who obtained the highest total scores from all the buns snatched became the winners. The results of the men's team and the women's team were ranked separately.
The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, launched the competition by striking a gong. Nine male and three female finalists immediately scrambled up the bun tower to grab as many buns as they could in a three-minute period.
In addition to the fierce individual competition there was also an invitation relay in which teams from Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Macau competed against the five teams from Cheung Chau. Two members of each team had to get specified buns at the top of the bun tower in relay. The first three teams finishing the race in the shortest time became the winners.

The 2012 Bun Carnival was jointly organised by the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, with the support of the Cheung Chau Wai Chiu County Association Limited, the Cheung Chau Rural Committee, the Islands District Office and the China Hong Kong Mountaineering and Climbing Union, and was sponsored by Lukfook Jewellery, A.S. Watson Water and the Islands District Council.
