Regulations to implement United Nations sanctions against Liberia gazetted

     The Government today (April 27) gazetted the United Nations Sanctions (Liberia) Regulation 2012 (the Regulation) and the United Nations Sanctions (Liberia) Regulation 2011 (Repeal) Regulation (the Repeal Regulation).  The Regulation (except the provisions relating to financial sanctions) came into effect on the same date.  The provisions of the Regulation that relate to financial sanctions and the Repeal Regulation will come into effect on May 4.

     "The Regulation implements sanctions against Liberia imposed by the United Nations Security Council under Resolution 2025 and continues the implementation of the existing financial sanctions against Liberia under the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1532," a Government spokesman said.

     The sanctions under the Regulation include:

* prohibition against the supply, sale, transfer or carriage of arms or related materiel to a person operating in the territory of Liberia;

* prohibition against the provision of assistance, advice or training related to military activities to a person operating in the territory of Liberia;

* prohibition against making available to certain persons or entities any funds or other financial assets or economic resources, or dealing with funds or other financial assets or economic resources of certain persons or entities; and

* prohibition against the entry into or transit through the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region by certain persons.
