************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Curriculum Development Council:

The Curriculum Development Council and its committees have expressed deepest sorrow at the passing of Professor Edmond Ko Inq-ming, Chair of the Curriculum Development Council last week.

Professor Ko was the Senior Advisor to the Provost, Director of the Center for Engineering Education Innovation, and Adjunct Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2010.

Professor Ko was a great educator who achieved numerous teaching awards. Serving as Chairman of the Curriculum Development Council since 2007, he made tremendous contributions in promoting the New Academic Structure and the New Senior Secondary curriculum. With his profound and extensive knowledge, Professor Ko always offered unique and enlightening insights into education and concepts about learning. In the past few years, he played a prominent role in guiding the Curriculum Development Council towards thorough deliberations and in-depth analyses on various curriculum development issues, all of which helped to ensure that curriculum development could cater for students' learning needs and keep abreast of the times. In particular, Professor Ko had a passion for nurturing students' independent learning and constructive learning experiences. Putting his words into action, Professor Ko did his utmost to realise the vision of whole-person development and life-long learning while at the same time enhancing Hong Kong's human resources and competitiveness.

In the last few years, despite his very heavy workload, Professor Ko selflessly and generously contributed his valuable time to the education arena. Apart from engaging in the formulation of various education policies, he was fully committed to promoting teachers' professional development in the area of curriculum development as well as fostering partnership and seeking exchange with professional organisations. Professor Ko's passing is a tremendous loss to the education sector.

The Curriculum Development Council and its committees will continue to make every effort to enhance the quality of education in Hong Kong for the benefits of our students. All members would like to thank Professor Ko for his distinguished contribution to curriculum development, and extend deepest condolences to his family.
