Members of the public enjoyed the fun of climbing the bun tower at the Climbing Carnival of the 2012 Bun Carnival held on Cheung Chau today (April 22). On a joyful Sunday, they also experienced the traditions of the Cheung Chau Jiao Festival.
The Climbing Carnival was held at the soccer pitch, Pak Tai Temple Playground, Cheung Chau. After making on-site applications, carnival participants climbed the 14-metre-tall bun tower set up for the Bun Scrambling Competition to be held in the evening of April 28. Spectators also made wishes on the "wishing bun tower".
In today's carnival, eight teams from local tertiary institutions, government departments, public utilities and commercial and industrial organisations competed in the invitation relays. The championship went to the team from the Hong Kong University Student Union Sport Climbing Club.
Festival-goers also had fun at games stalls featuring the themes of the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the bun festival, climbing as a sport, as well as handicrafts, variety shows and demonstrations on bun tower climbing and safety measures performed by the China Hong Kong Mountaineering and Climbing Union.
The 2012 Bun Carnival is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department between April 8 and 29.
Twelve finalists comprising nine men and three women will compete for individual awards in the Bun Scrambling Competition, the grand finale of the 2012 Bun Carnival, to be held from 11.30pm on April 28 to 12.30am on April 29 at the soccer pitch, Pak Tai Temple Playground, Cheung Chau.
