Learning music in a beautiful campsite and sharing the experience with other budding musicians can enable young performers to find fresh inspiration.

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department's Music Office is now inviting applications for participation in the 2012 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp. A well-received annual summer programme, the camp offers young musicians an opportunity to receive training from renowned overseas, Mainland and local musicians and share the experience with other budding musicians in a scenic environment.

The 2012 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp will be held from July 29 to August 4 (Camp A) and from August 5 to 11 (Camp B) at the Tso Kung Tam Outdoor Recreation Centre in Tai Mo Shan. Qualified local young musicians aged 9 to 25 are welcome to apply. The fee is $1,030 per person for the seven-day and six-night music camp.

Young musicians from overseas and the Mainland are also welcome to join the Youth Music Camp, with an extra day added, to have exchanges with local musicians in camps to be held from July 29 to August 5 (Camp A) and from August 5 to 12 (Camp B). The fee for overseas and Mainland campers is $1,580 per person for the eight-day and seven-night music camp.

Young musicians may choose to join one of the music groups, which comprise the Chinese Orchestra, the Children's Choir and the Junior String Orchestra in Camp A, and the Symphony Orchestra, the Symphonic Band and the Junior Chinese Orchestra in Camp B.

The day camp, entitled "A Music Day Tour of Fun", at $55 per person per day will also be available every Monday to Friday from July 30 to August 10 for organisations, families and any other groups of individuals to share delightful musical activities such as visits to the camp choir, band and orchestra rehearsals, mini concerts, musical games and various kinds of recreational facilities available in the camp. A concessionary rate at $40 per person for children, full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 and above and people with disabilities is also available.

Renowned musicians participating in this year's training programme include the Resident Conductor of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and Conductor of the Hong Kong Junior Chinese Orchestra, Mr Chew Hee-chiat; the Professor of Music at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Chorusmaster of the Grand Rapids Symphony (United States), Dr Pearl Shangkuan; the Professor of Cello at the Central Conservatory of Music (Beijing) and the first Chinese prize winner in the International Cello Competition in Geneva (Switzerland), Mr Chu Yibing; the Founding Artistic and Executive Director of American Century Music and the Sole Conducting Fellow at Tanglewood Music Centre in 2002, Mr Scott Parkman; the Conductor of Derbyshire City and County Youth Wind Band and former Director of Music at the University of Warwick (United Kingdom), Mr Colin Touchin; and the Assistant Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Concert Orchestra of the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati (United States), Ms Jing Huan.

Campers will take part in intensive orchestral, band or choral training programmes conducted by different musicians to enhance their musical skills as well as participate in recreational activities such as ball games, archery, roller-skating, sports climbing and mini-golf at the campsite.

Two concerts will be held in August at the conclusion of the camp to showcase the campers' achievements.
