Appointments to Quality Education Fund Steering Committee

     The Education Bureau today (December 30) announced the appointment of a new Chairman and members to the Quality Education Fund Steering Committee (QEFSC).

     Mr Duffy Wong Chun-nam has been appointed as the Chairman of the QEFSC from January 1, 2012, to January 15, 2014. Mr Wong is currently a member of the QEFSC and the Chairman of the Assessment and Monitoring Sub-Committee of the QEF, and is the Partner (Solicitor) of Ho, Wong & Wong, Solicitors & Notaries.
 
     The following members have been appointed to the QEFSC:

* Dr Simon Shen Xu-hui, Associate Professor and External Relations Co-ordinator, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Hong Kong Institute of Education

* Mr Liu Ah-chuen, Principal, Christian Alliance S W Chan Memorial College

* Mr David Ho Chi-hoo, Chief Executive, Macy's Candies Ltd.

     The following member has been re-appointed to the QEFSC:

* Mrs Rita Mansukhani Au Hay-lun, Ex-principal (co-opted member)

     The members' appointments will take effect from January 16, 2012, for a term of two years.

     "I am confident that with the above appointments, the Quality Education Fund (QEF) will continue with its excellent work in the promotion of quality school education in Hong Kong," said the Secretary for Education, Mr Michael Suen.

     In making the appointments, Mr Suen paid high regard to the outgoing Chairman of the QEFSC, Mr Pang Yiu-kai.

     "Mr Pang has made a remarkable contribution to the QEF in the past years. Under his capable leadership, the QEF has consolidated into a robust vehicle in pioneering innovative education projects and raising the quality of education in Hong Kong," Mr Suen said.

     He also thanked the outgoing members, Mr Patrick Chan Kwok-wai and Mr Langton Cheung Yung-pong, for their contributions to the QEFSC in the past years.

     The QEF was established in early 1998 with capital of $5 billion to fund community initiatives which promote quality education in Hong Kong. The QEFSC advises on policies and the operation of the QEF and also makes recommendations to the Fund's Trustee on the awards of grants.

     Since its establishment, the Fund has supported over 8 000 projects with a total grant amounting to around $3.9 billion.
