********************************************************

The Hong Kong Observatory Calendar 2012 is now on sale.

To reflect the 2012 World Meteorological Day theme, "Powering our future with weather, climate and water", the calendar illustrates the links between various activities in the community and the services provided by the Hong Kong Observatory, and how we can make our future better with them.

In the preface, the Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Mr Shun Chi-ming, wrote, "I sincerely hope that while you appreciate the weather, climate and water through photographs in this calendar and the use of climatological information in planning activities, you would provide your valuable feedback on improving our services to meet the increasing demands of our energetic city."

The calendar contains useful climatological and astronomical information, including monthly climatological data, the times for the rising and setting of the sun and the moon, and tidal information. Also listed are the Hong Kong Observatory telephone numbers and websites for accessing the weather and geophysical information. In addition, the calendar this year is enhanced with the annual climatological summary for Hong Kong, information on interesting climatological events for each month and dates of eclipses of the sun and the moon. The climatological normals have also been updated based on the 30-year period of 1981-2010.

At $66 a copy, the calendar is an excellent New Year gift for friends and relatives. It is on sale at the Observatory's Resource Centre, the Publications Sales Unit of the Information Services Department, the Kowloon Map Publications Centre of the Lands Department, the General Post Office, Tsim Sha Tsui Post Office, Tuen Mun Central Post Office and Sha Tin Central Post Office. The calendar is also available through the online Government Bookstore at www.bookstore.gov.hk.

Please contact the Experimental Officer of the Hong Kong Observatory, Miss Shum Kit-ying, at 2926 8240 for further information.
