The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (December 20) the December 2011 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).
In this issue, three feature articles entitled "Hong Kong as a Knowledge-based Economy", "Port Cargo Statistics, 2005 to 2010" and "New Series of Effective Exchange Rate Index for the Hong Kong Dollar" are included.
"Hong Kong as a Knowledge-based Economy"
The global economy has undergone significant changes in recent years. One of the key features of the changes is the growing importance of knowledge in all sectors of economic activities. Knowledge, as embodied in human capital and in technology, is now seen as a vital source of long-term economic growth. The degree of incorporation of information and knowledge into economic activities has now become so great that it is inducing profound structural and qualitative changes in the way an economy operates.
By presenting some relevant statistical indicators which capture the essence of a knowledge-based economy (KBE), this feature article aims at portraying the development of Hong Kong towards a KBE in the past decade from different perspectives.

"Port Cargo Statistics, 2005 to 2010"
The port of Hong Kong is a major hub port of the Asia-Pacific region. Hong Kong's port cargo throughput increased by 10.2% from 243 million tonnes in 2009 to 268 million tonnes in 2010. The port cargo movements between Hong Kong and the mainland of China (the Mainland) accounted for 41.9% of Hong Kong's port cargo throughput in 2010. About 75.6% of Hong Kong-Mainland port cargo movements were between Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region. This feature article provides a detailed analysis of the port cargo statistics of Hong Kong from 2005 to 2010.

"New Series of Effective Exchange Rate Index for the Hong Kong Dollar"
The Effective Exchange Rate Index (EERI) for the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) compiled by C&SD is an index which measures movements in the weighted average of the exchange rate of the HKD against the currencies of major trading partners of Hong Kong. A review of the EERI has been conducted recently and a new series is compiled. The new series of EERI will be released starting from January 3, 2012. This feature article discusses the differences between the old and the new series of EERI.

Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing about 140 tables. It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong. Topics include population and vital events; labour; external trade; industrial production; land, housing, building and construction; transport, communications and tourism; public accounts, money and finance; prices; commerce; social conditions; energy; and national income and Balance of Payments. For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available.

Print version of the publication is available for sale at HK$248 per issue. C&SD has recently conducted a review on the printing of statistical publications and has decided that the print version of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics will no longer be produced starting from the 2012 series. Nevertheless, the Digest is still available for downloading free of charge from the C&SD website.
