************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Electoral Affairs Commission:

Vote counting for the 2011 Election Committee Subsector Elections was completed smoothly at 10.45am today (December 12).

The counting of ballot papers for 24 contested subsectors took about 10 hours and 30 minutes to complete after the polls closed last night (December 11).

About 65 500 voters cast their ballots in the elections and the cumulative voter turnout rate was about 27.5 per cent. (These figures are for temporary reference only.)

"The elections were concluded successfully in an open, fair and honest manner. The counting of votes was smooth and efficient. The Commission is satisfied with the overall electoral arrangements," the Chairman of the Electoral Affairs Commission, Mr Justice Barnabas Fung Wah, said at the media centre after the announcement of all election results.

The Commission is grateful to the 3 500 polling and counting staff and the government departments involved in the elections, especially the Registration and Electoral Office, for making arrangements for voters and candidates so that the elections were conducted smoothly. The Commission also thanked all the voters for voting, and the candidates and their agents for their co-operation.

The interim register of members of the new term Election Committee will be published on December 21. According to the law, the final register will take effect on February 1, 2012.

The Commission will review the electoral arrangements and submit a report on the Subsector Elections and the 2012 Chief Executive Election to the Chief Executive within three months after the Chief Executive Election in March 2012.
