Statistics Advisory Board reviews government statistical work
*********************************************************

The Statistics Advisory Board held a meeting today (December 8) to review the main scope of government statistical work and its recent developments.

At the meeting, members were updated on the latest progress of the 2011 Population Census (11C).  The Commissioner for Census and Statistics and Chairman of the Statistics Advisory Board, Mrs Lily Ou-yang, said, "The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) has smoothly conducted the 2011 Population Census (11C).  It is planned to release the summary results of 11C in February 2012 and the more detailed results in phases afterwards.  To provide statistics that meet the needs of a variety of data users, a wide range of statistical products and services will be produced for 11C and will be available free of charge on the C&SD website."

Members were briefed on the 2011 round of the International Comparison Program (ICP), of which Hong Kong was one of the 180 participating economies.  Co-ordinated by the World Bank, the ICP is a major global statistical initiative for deriving data for measuring Purchasing Power Parities (PPP) among different currencies, which enable a better cross-economy comparison of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and some other important economic aggregates.

Also reported at the meeting were the measures implemented by C&SD in establishing rapport with respondents of statistical surveys conducted by C&SD.  These measures help secure a high response rate, thereby ensuring the quality of statistics compiled from these surveys.  Members also discussed the proposed strengthening measures targeting at establishments and households with a view to further encouraging their co-operation in responding to the surveys.

Providing public with easy access to official statistics is a core business of C&SD.  Members noted that C&SD is planning to expand the means of dissemination for key statistical information through developing a new mobile website in the light of the increasing popularity of smart phones.  The mobile website, which is expected to be launched in the second quarter of 2012, will provide browsing and searching features specifically designed for mobile phone users.

The Board reviewed other statistical developments since the previous meeting, including the latest progress of the planning of the World Statistics Congress to be held in Hong Kong in 2013 and professional assistance rendered to the latest round of Manpower Projections.

The Statistics Advisory Board is a non-statutory advisory body which advises the Commissioner for Census and Statistics on matters pertaining to government statistical work.  Its membership consists of established professionals of the business sector, the academia and the community, which provides for a wide representation to assist the Commissioner in integrating views of data users, data suppliers and statisticians.  The terms of reference and composition of the Board can be found on the C&SD website (www.censtatd.gov.hk/about_us/our_advisory_board/index.jsp).
