Be a caring consumer and support social enterprises at the HKBPE
***********************************************************

With Christmas and New Year approaching, members of the public will have the opportunity to buy gifts for relatives and friends and at the same time support the underprivileged to stay self-reliant by shopping at the social enterprise (SE) booths at the Hong Kong Brands and Products Expo (HKBPE).

This year the Home Affairs Department (HAD) will again arrange for SEs sponsored by the Enhancing Self-Reliance Through District Partnership Programme (ESR Programme) to showcase their products and services at the complimentary booths offered by the organiser of HKBPE, the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong. Interested members of the public are invited to visit booths 3A42 to 3A46 in the Social Enterprise Zone of the HKBPE in Victoria Park, Causeway Bay from this Saturday (December 10) to January 2, 2012.

Sixteen SEs will take turns to showcase their products and services, which come in a wide range including health food and drinks, organic farm products, accessories and gifts, household items, car cleaning and care products and bicycle eco-tours. In addition to sale products and services, some SEs will give out coupons, provide massage services or demonstrate product usage on site. Please refer to the Annex for details of the expo schedule.

The ESR Programme has been providing seed money for non-profit-making organisations to set up SEs, which in turn provide opportunities for the underprivileged to enhance their skills and capabilities for effective integration into society.

A total funding of about $125 million has been approved in 10 phases since the programme was set up in 2006. More than 120 SEs have been set up and they cover a wide range of trades and industries, including services for the elderly, catering and retailing, environmentally-friendly products and eco-tourism. More than 2 000 jobs have been created for the underprivileged as a result.
