Territory-wide campaign to promote pedestrian safety
****************************************************

Police concluded a one-week territory-wide pedestrian safety campaign on November 27.  Through education, publicity and stringent enforcement actions, pedestrians, in particular the elderly, were reminded of the importance of road safety.

A total of 309 verbal warnings and 925 summonses were issued to pedestrians during the campaign conducted from November 21 to 27.

During the above period, Police issued 713 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 70 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge/pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge/pedestrian subway and 55 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a light signal crossing other than at the crossing.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams had distributed some 10 000 publicity leaflets at 311 locations across the territory and appealed to the public to comply with road safety regulations.

"Pedestrians are reminded to take care and to cross the road safely.  Those who fail to comply with the law may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000", a Police spokesman said.
