No works relating to Integrated Waste Management Facilities carried out
************************************************************

In response to an allegation that works relating to the Integrated Waste Management Facilities (IWMF) have been carried out ahead of approval by the Legislative Council, a spokesman for the Environmental Protection Department said today (November 24) that the allegation was totally unfounded.

"The statutory procedures of the Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance and the Foreshore and Sea-bed (Reclamations) Ordinance in relation to the IWMF are still going on. The Government has not carried out any sea-bed and reclamation works for the IWMF in Shek Kwu Chau," the spokesman said.

To tackle the imminent waste problem in Hong Kong, the Government has devised a comprehensive strategy and an action plan covering enhancing waste reduction and recovery, implementing advanced waste treatment facilities and expanding the landfills in a timely manner. The development of the IWMF is a core part of the strategy.
