Key statistics on operating characteristics of the import/export, wholesale and retail trades, and accommodation and food services sectors in 2010

     According to the results of the 2010 Annual Survey of Economic Activities - Import/Export, Wholesale and Retail Trades, and Accommodation and Food Services Sectors released today (November 24) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), the import/export, wholesale and retail trades, and accommodation and food services sectors' total receipts (i.e. sales and other receipts) amounted to $4,132.7 billion in 2010, representing an increase of 17.9% over 2009; on a per establishment basis, total receipts increased by 13.2% compared with 2009 to $24.5 million in 2010.

     Operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees of the sectors altogether amounted to $3,854.4 billion in 2010, representing an increase of 17.8% over 2009; on a per establishment basis, they increased by 13.1% compared with 2009 to $22.8 million in 2010.

     Gross surplus of the sectors, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees, increased by 18.9% over 2009 to $278.2 billion in 2010; on a per establishment basis, gross surplus increased from $1.4 million in 2009 to $1.6 million in 2010.  Gross surplus accounted for 6.7% of total receipts in 2010, almost the same as in 2009.

     Value added of the sectors, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, increased by 13.7% over 2009 to $485.9 billion in 2010; on a per establishment basis, the value added was $2.9 million in 2010, which increased by 9.1% over 2009.

     According to the survey results, it was estimated that the sectors comprised some 168 800 establishments and engaged about 1 078 600 persons, or an average of 6.4 persons per establishment, in 2010.

     In the import and export trade, total receipts amounted to $3,392.1 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $3,173.0 billion in 2010.  Gross surplus increased from $188.6 billion in 2009 to $219.2 billion in 2010, accounting for 6.5% of total receipts in 2010.  Value added increased by 12.2% over 2009 to $354.3 billion.

     In the wholesale trade, total receipts amounted to $250.6 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $242.5 billion in 2010.  Gross surplus increased from $6.2 billion in 2009 to $8.1 billion in 2010, accounting for 3.2% of total receipts in 2010.  Value added increased by 22.8% over 2009 to $17.5 billion.

     In the retail trade, total receipts amounted to $359.5 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $326.9 billion in 2010.  Gross surplus increased from $24.5 billion in 2009 to $32.6 billion in 2010, accounting for 9.1% of total receipts in 2010.  Value added increased by 20.0% over 2009 to $59.9 billion.

     In the accommodation services sector which mainly covered hotels, guesthouses, boarding houses and other establishments providing short term accommodation, total receipts amounted to $29.1 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $18.3 billion in 2010.  Gross surplus increased from $7.3 billion in 2009 to $10.8 billion in 2010, accounting for 37.1% of total receipts in 2010.  Value added increased significantly by 29.7% over 2009 to $18.9 billion.

     In the food services sector which mainly covered restaurants, total receipts amounted to $101.4 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $93.7 billion in 2010.  Gross surplus increased from $7.4 billion in 2009 to $7.6 billion in 2010, accounting for 7.5% of total receipts in 2010.  Value added increased by 6.9% over 2009 to $35.2 billion.
