Nominations for Election Committee Subsector Elections ruled
************************************************************

The 1,451 nomination forms received during the nomination period for the Election Committee Subsector Elections (except District Councils subsectors and religious subsector) have all been processed. Two candidates had withdrawn their nominations before the close of the nomination period. Three nominations were ruled invalid by the Returning Officers as the nominees concerned were not registered geographical constituency electors. The information is set out below:

Subsector                     Invalid nomination
---------                     ------------------
Accountancy                           1
Higher education                      1
Sports, performing arts,
culture and publication
     Culture sub-subsector            1

The number of validly nominated candidates (i.e. 14) of the culture sub-subsector of the sports, performing arts, culture and publication subsector is less than the number of seats allocated to this sub-subsector (i.e. 15).

"The above ruling of nominations will not affect the Election Committee Subsector Elections to be held on December 11 or the Chief Executive Election to be held in March next year. Although the number of validly nominated candidates for the culture sub-subsector is less than the number of seats allocated to this sub-subsector, there is at present no provision in the Chief Executive Election Ordinance which allows the Administration to conduct a by-election to fill the remaining vacant seat of the sub-subsector concerned," a spokesman for the Registration and Electoral Office said today (November 18).

With regard to the religious subsector, 60 members are allocated to this subsector. Six designated bodies submitted nomination forms during the nomination period, involving a total of 108 nominees. Amongst the nominees, five were ruled invalid by the Returning Officer as they were not registered geographical constituency electors or their information on the nomination form was incomplete.

With the exception of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, the other five designated bodies have indicated their order of preference in respect of the nominees on the nomination forms. The Returning Officer will therefore arrange lot drawing for the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong in order to decide which nominees of this designated body will represent this subsector to become as Election Committee members.

The ruling of the Returning Officers on the validity of nominations for the non-District Council subsectors will be uploaded to the election website (www.elections.gov.hk/ecss2011/eng/nominat2.html) later today, the spokesman said.

For the election of non-District Council subsectors (except religious subsector), the total number of validly nominated candidates now stands at 1,446. Voting for 22 contested subsectors involving 1,169 candidates will be held on December 11. Voting for 11 subsectors will not be required and 277 candidates will be returned uncontested. The lists of all validly nominated candidates for subsectors and the uncontested members will be published in the Gazette on November 22.
