LCSD to present "Mahler in Hi-Fi & Hi-Vi" concert
*************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present the "Mahler in Hi-Fi & Hi-Vi" concert in December, including the editors of local classical music magazine Hi Fi Review, Savio Lau and Janet Yeung, as moderators. Coordinated by Hi Fi Review, the event is being held to mark the centenary of the great composer's death.

Mahler's richly varied music allows plenty of room for interpretation by conductors. While there are many recorded versions of Mahler's symphonies, some of which are regarded as classics, the question as to which version is best is a topic of heated debate among music lovers and hi-fi addicts alike.

In recent years, with the great technological advance of video recording, some very good live videos of great Mahler concerts have become available. For this concert, Lau and Yeung will be joined by music critics Oliver Chou, Leon Chu, Dennis Wu and Chui Yun, to discuss Mahler's musical interpretation, sound, and concepts.

Mahler recordings, including "Symphony No. 1" (conductor Michael Tilson Thomas), "Symphony No. 8" (conductor Leonard Bernstein), "Das Lied von der Erde" (conductor Semyon Bychkov, alto Waltraud Meier), "Symphony No. 6" (conductor Claudio Abbado), "Symphony No. 9" (conductor Claudio Abbado) and "Symphony No. 3" (conductor Takashi Asahina) will be played using hi-end equipment that guarantees an evening of musical appreciation and hi-fi/hi-vi at their most seductive.

"Mahler in Hi-Fi & Hi-Vi" will be conducted in Cantonese and held at 7.30pm on December 16 (Friday) at the Lecture Hall, Hong Kong Space Museum. Tickets priced at $60 (free seating) are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
