The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has invited Weeping Spoon Productions (Australia) to perform its solo show "The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer" in Hong Kong - an enchanting story told by intriguing stick-figure animation and clever puppetry.
The show is created and performed by Tim Watts, who employs a unique blend of puppetry, music, and animation to present an exploration of the oldest uncharted frontier: the deep blue sea. It is a multi award-winning one-man micro-epic puppet show that melds technology and multimedia into a touching story of enduring love and the end of the world. The production has toured all over the world, including the USA, New Zealand, India and Korea, and has received overwhelming responses from the audience and reviewers alike. The show has received many awards including Best Theatre Show (Auckland Fringe 2011); the Best Puppetry (Adelaide Fringe 2010); Outstanding Solo Show (New York International Fringe Festival 2009); Best Production, Best Production Team and Members Choice (Blue Rooms 2009).
In Watts' story, the seas have risen, billions have died and those who are left live on farms on top of skyscrapers and mountains. The scientists have tried everything but all methods have failed. Now science and humanity are turning to the oceans themselves. A last ditch effort to save the human race requires a journey down through the mysterious depths of the deep blue sea to find a new place for people to live. Alvin Sputnik, who has just lost his wife, accepts this perilous mission so that he may follow her soul down to the underworld and they can be together again.
A performer, deviser, director, producer, puppeteer and animator, Tim Watts is one of the founding members of Weeping Spoon Productions, an international multi award-winning independent theatre company based in Perth, Western Australia. He has performed, devised and directed theatre and participated in workshops all around Australia and the world, including Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Beijing, Shanghai, Prague, Montreal, Toronto, London, California and New York. Recent credits include those from "Deathtrap" (PICA, Perth), "The World Inspite of Itself", "Red Lashes" (UNIMA 2008, Perth), "Greed" (Canada Fringe), "Hope is the Saddest" (Brisbane Festival), "Duck Duck Goose" (The Blue Room, Perth), "Oscar" and "Heart of Gold" (PICA, Perth).
"The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer" by Weeping Spoon Productions (Australia) (performed in English, with Chinese surtitles) will be staged at 8pm on December 16 and 17 (Friday and Saturday), and at 3pm on December 18 (Sunday), at the Studio Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. This is one of the attractions of the "Cheers!" Series. Tickets priced at $180 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
