Key statistics on business performance and operating characteristics of the transportation, storage and courier services sector in 2010

     According to the results of the 2010 Annual Survey of Economic Activities - Transportation, Storage and Courier Services Sector released today (November 15) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), the transportation, storage and courier services sector's total receipts (comprising business receipts and other income) amounted to $486.5 billion in 2010, representing an increase of 25.8% over 2009; on a per establishment basis, total receipts increased by 32.6% compared with 2009 to $17.3 million in 2010.

     Operating expenses and compensation of employees of the sector altogether amounted to $411.2 billion in 2010, representing an increase of 18.2% over 2009; on a per establishment basis, they increased by 24.6% compared with 2009 to $14.6 million in 2010.

     Gross surplus of the sector, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses and compensation of employees, increased by 93.8% over 2009 to $75.3 billion in 2010; on a per establishment basis, gross surplus increased from $1.3 million in 2009 to $2.7 million in 2010.  Gross surplus accounted for 15.5% of total receipts in 2010, up by 5.4 percentage points over 2009.

     Value added of the sector, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, increased significantly by 40.5% over 2009 to $131.4 billion in 2010; on a per establishment basis, the value added was $4.7 million in 2010, which increased by 48.1% over 2009.

     According to the survey results, it was estimated that the sector comprised some 28 100 establishments and engaged about 221 100 persons, or an average of 7.9 persons per establishment, in 2010.

     Within the transportation, storage and courier services sector, the four largest industry groupings in terms of value added in 2010 were (1) air transport and service activities incidental to air transportation, (2) land passenger transport, (3) cross-border water transport, and (4) other transportation support activities.  They together accounted for 79.4% of the value added of the sector.

     In the air transport and service activities incidental to air transportation industry, total receipts amounted to $118.7 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $90.8 billion in 2010.  Gross surplus increased from $12.7 billion in 2009 to $27.9 billion in 2010, accounting for 23.5% of total receipts in 2010.  Value added increased significantly by 52.8% over 2009 to $45.5 billion.

     In the land passenger transport industry, total receipts amounted to $38.4 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $26.8 billion in 2010.  Gross surplus increased from $11.0 billion in 2009 to $11.6 billion in 2010, accounting for 30.3% of total receipts in 2010.  Value added increased by 1.8% over 2009 to $22.9 billion.

     In the cross-border water transport industry, total receipts amounted to $106.7 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $92.4 billion in 2010.  Gross surplus rebounded from -$1.7 billion in 2009 to $14.3 billion in 2010, accounting for 13.4% of total receipts in 2010.  Value added increased significantly by 534.7% over 2009 to $19.2 billion.

     In the other transportation support activities industry which comprised mainly cargo forwarders and shipbrokers, total receipts amounted to $154.3 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $146.3 billion in 2010.  Gross surplus increased from $5.4 billion in 2009 to $8.0 billion in 2010, accounting for 5.2% of total receipts in 2010.  Value added increased by 13.7% compared with 2009 to $16.7 billion.
