Hong Kong City Chinese Orchestra to play popular Chinese music

     Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Hong Kong City Chinese Orchestra will perform concerts of popular Chinese music in December 2011 and January 2012.

     The concerts will feature renowned Chinese music conductors Xia Feiyun (December 4 only) and Zhao Xintai (December 10 only), conductor and erhu soloist Ching Sau-wing, erhu soloist Wan Hei-man, guzheng soloist Yu Hong and Ng Hiu-hung, dizi soloist Chan Chun-nin and Cheng Chawen, and pipa soloist Lam Siu-king.

     The programme includes the popular pieces such as "TV Theme Suite", "Spring Festival Overture", "Shepherd's New Song", "Ballad of Lan Hua Hua", "The Newly Weds' Farewell to Each Other", "Little Stream", "Moonlight over Spring River" and "Honghu Capriccio", among other works.

     Established in 1994, the Hong Kong City Chinese Orchestra endeavours to promote Chinese culture, to enhance the development of Chinese music in the territory, and to foster extensive exchange activities between local and overseas musicians. The orchestra has released three albums of Chinese music. "The Three Maestros", recorded with the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, which includes selected erhu pieces, is one of the best-selling albums in the Asia-Pacific region. In 2000, the Orchestra organised a series of five concerts and 11 seminars were in "A Retrospective Look at Chinese Music in the Twentieth Century". The programme attracted great interest among music circles in the Mainland and overseas.

     The concert by Hong Kong City Chinese Orchestra is one of the attractions of the "Cheers!" series. Tickets priced from $100 to $160 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
