The winners of the open category and the student category of the 21st Chinese Poetry Writing Competition have both used elegant regulated poetry to express their feelings on new environments.
Mr Tung Sau-sang's five-character regulated poem was selected from more than 700 entries in the open category, while a student from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Mr Chan Wing-sang, was awarded the First Prize in the student category, which had more than 200 entries.
Other winning works featured a wide range of topics including the earthquake in Japan and the nuclear leakage, high property prices in Hong Kong and environmental protection.
Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony held today (October 10) at the Hong Kong Central Library (HKCL), the Deputy Director (Culture) of Leisure and Cultural Services, Mr Chung Ling-hoi, pointed out that the Chinese Poetry Writing Competition has been organised by the Public Libraries (HKPL) for 21 years. With the publicity efforts over the years and the support of its participants, the competition has become an important literary event in the development of Chinese poetry.
He said that the enthusiastic response to the competition this year was the result of fruitful efforts in promoting Chinese poetry writing.
The annual competition has been organised since 1991 to promote proficiency in Chinese language and appreciation of rhyming Chinese literature.
Adjudicators for this year's competition were Professor Ho Man-wui, Professor Chow Sik-fuk, Professor Chan Chi-ching, Professor Wong Kwan-io and Professor Lau Wai-lam.
More than 900 entries were received in the competition. Participants used either five-character regulated poetry or seven-character regulated poetry to showcase their creativity, with topics ranging from day-to-day life and historic events to travel experiences and personal feelings.
The competition consists of the student category and the open category, each with a First Prize, Second Prize, Third Prize, five Merit Prizes and two Special Prizes. The winners lists is as follows:

The 21st Chinese Poetry Writing Competition's winning works are now on display until October 26 at the Foyer on the ground floor of the HKCL. A roving exhibition is being held at various public libraries.
