Suspended jail sentence for woman feeding birds and fouling public places
************************************************************

A 58-year-old woman who repeatedly fed birds and fouled public places was sentenced in the Eastern Magistrates' Courts today (October 7) to four weeks' imprisonment, suspended for two years, and fined a total of $5,000.

The woman was found feeding birds at the junction of Fenwick Street and Johnston Road and at Oi Kwan Road in Wan Chai by officers of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) on July 23 and August 12 respectively. She was subsequently prosecuted for breaching the Public Cleansing and Prevention of Nuisances Regulation.

An FEHD spokesman said, "To maintain personal hygiene, keep public places clean and prevent the spread of diseases that may be carried by birds, people should not feed wild pigeons and birds.

"Offenders are liable to prosecution and a maximum fine of $25,000 and six months' imprisonment."
