Man given suspended jail sentence for assaulting two FEHD officers
**********************************************************

A 43-year-old man who assaulted two Hawker Control Officers of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) causing bodily harm was sentenced to two months' imprisonment, suspended for three years, in Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Courts today (September 28).

The incident took place outside Mui Wo Market on Lantau Island on July 23.

During an FEHD operation against unlicensed hawkers, the man was found causing obstruction in public place, hawking without a licence and selling restricted food without written permission of the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene. Under an attempted arrest, the man refused to co-operate and assaulted two FEHD officers.

Moreover, the man was fined $800 by the court for other aforesaid offences.

"To use force against public officers is not right and carries legal consequences. People should co-operate with law enforcement officers in their exercise of their duties," an FEHD spokesman said.
