LegCo delegation attends the Ad Hoc Committee on Protection of the Rights of the Migrant Workers (with photos)

     The Legislative Council (LegCo) delegation to the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) Conference at Solo attended today (September 28) the meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee on Protection of the Rights of the Migrant Workers as guest delegation at the invitation of Dr Marzuki Alie, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Indonesia. The delegation has presented an information paper on "Protection of the Rights of the Migrant Workers in Hong Kong SAR" to the Ad Hoc Committee.  

     At today's meeting, LegCo President's Deputy and Chairman of the House Committee, Ms Miriam Lau highlighted the protection afforded by local legislation and administrative measures to migrant workers in Hong Kong, especially the foreign domestic helpers who constitute 3.9% of the population, i.e. 273 609 persons. She also listed the other support provided to migrant workers by government departments and non-government organisations. The Chairman of the meeting, Sidharto Danusubroto, commented that Hong Kong has a good record for the protection of the rights of migrant workers.  

     Mr Lee Cheuk-yan, Dr Pan Pey-chyou and Mr Leung Kwok-hung also attended the meeting. The delegation will continue to observe the APA Conference until its conclusion tomorrow (September 29). China, Pakistan, Kuwait and 14 other Asian countries have also sent delegates to the Conference and the Ad Hoc Committee meeting.
