LegCo Panel on Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene begins its duty visit to Japan

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

     The Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene departed for Tokyo, Japan today (September 25) to begin its six-day duty visit in response to an invitation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

     The purpose of the visit is to enable members to better understand the up-to-date situation in Japan following its earthquake in March this year. During the visit, the delegation will study, among others, the food safety measures taken by the relevant authorities in Japan in response to the Daiichi nuclear power plant incident, the surveillance and testing of food in particular on the radiation levels for export from Japan, as well as the impact of the Daiichi nuclear power plant incident on food exporters in Japan.

     During its stay in Japan, the delegation will visit Tokyo, Kumamoto and Miyazaki. The delegation will meet with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan; the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare; the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries; the Food Safety Commission; and the Kumamoto Prefectural Government officials. The delegation will also visit the National Diet of Japan; the Wholesale Market Sanitation Inspection Station at Tsukiji; the Inspection Station for Agricultural Product Exports in Kumamoto; and the Safety Inspection Station for Beef in Miyazaki.
