Appointments to Elderly Commission

     The Government announced today (July 22) the appointment of Professor Alfred Chan Cheung-ming as Chairman of the Elderly Commission and Dr Lam Ching-choi as Vice-Chairman. Six new members and 10 incumbent members were also appointed and re-appointed respectively. The appointments and re-appointments will take effect from July 30.

     Professor Alfred Chan Cheung-ming is the Chair Professor of Social Gerontology at Lingnan University and an academic in ageing research and studies. He is dedicated to enhancing elderly welfare and has been actively involved in the promotion of active ageing among the elderly.

     Dr Lam Ching-choi is the Chief Executive Officer of the Haven of Hope Christian Service. He has rich experience in elderly services and is committed to improving long-term care services for the elderly.

     The six new members are Ms Maggie Chan Man-ki, Mrs Lilian Chan Lui Ling-yee, Mr Henry Shie Wai-hung, Dr Tung Sau-ying, Mr Jackson Wong Fan-foung and Mrs Doris Wong Wong Yu-sum.  

     Ms Maggie Chan Man-ki is a solicitor in private practice. She is currently a member of Wong Tai Sin District Council.

     Mrs Lilian Chan Lui Ling-yee is the Chief Executive (Hon) of the Third Age Centre, the Hong Kong Association of Senior Citizens.

     Mr Henry Shie Wai-hung is the Executive Director of Hiu Kwong Nursing Service Ltd. He is currently Vice-Chairman (External Affairs) of the Elderly Services Association of Hong Kong.

     Dr Tung Sau-ying is the Cluster Chief Executive of the Kowloon West Cluster of the Hospital Authority.  

     Mr Jackson Wong Fan-foung is the Chairman of Bunhoi Group, and was Chairperson of Pok Oi Hospital in 2010-11.

     Mrs Doris Wong Wong Yu-sum is the Principal Social Services Secretary (Elderly and Rehabilitation Services) of the Po Leung Kuk.

     The 10 incumbent members who have been re-appointed are Dr Felix Chan Hon-wai, Dr Eric Cheng Kam-chung, Dr Cheung Moon-wah, Dr Alice Chong Ming-lin, Ms Sylvia Fung Yuk-kuen, Mr Patrick Ma Ching-hang, Mr Timothy Ma Kam-wah, Dr John Wong Yee-him, Mr Marco Wu Moon-hoi and Mr Stephen Yau How-boa.

     The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, welcomed the new appointments and re-appointments. He said, "The new Chairman and Vice-Chairman are both well experienced in elderly services, while the members come from different sectors, each with his or her own expertise. I look forward to working closely with them for the development of elderly services and promotion of the well-being of the elderly in Hong Kong."

     Meanwhile, Mr Cheung paid warm tribute to the outgoing Chairman, Dr Leong Che-hung, for his exemplary contribution in steering the Commission over the past six years. He also thanked the six outgoing members, Mr Kenneth Chan Chi-yuk, Mr Chan Han-pan, Professor Helen Chiu Fung-kum, the Reverend Dorothy Lau Wai-ling, Mr Leo Ma Chan-hang and Dr Loretta Yam Yin-chun, for their valuable contribution during their tenure.

     The Elderly Commission was established in 1997 to advise the Government on the formulation of a comprehensive policy for the elderly. Members come from the health care, social welfare, elderly services, professional and academic sectors.

     The new membership list of the Elderly Commission with effect from July 30 is as follows:
