The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (July 20) the July 2011 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

In this issue, three feature articles entitled "Consumption Expenditure of Hong Kong Residents Travelling to the Mainland of China, 2010", "Statistics on Electronic Products and the Electronics Industry" and "The 2009/10-based Consumer Price Indices" are included.

"Consumption Expenditure of Hong Kong Residents Travelling to the Mainland of China, 2010"

In 2010, Hong Kong residents made a total of 72.7 million person-trips to the mainland of China (the Mainland) for business and personal purposes.  Of all the trips to the Mainland, business travel accounted for 33% and personal travel for 67%.

Personal travel refers to travel which is not business-related.  It covers travel in package tour mode and non-package tour mode for purposes such as holiday-making, visits to friends and relatives, and attending recreational and cultural programmes.

Of the 48.8 million personal trips to the Mainland, 55% were destined for Shenzhen, 38% for other places in the Guangdong Province and the remaining 7% for other places in the Mainland outside the Guangdong Province.  Analysed by length of stay, around 41% were same-day trips.  The remaining 59% were overnight trips, with average length of stay of 3.4 nights.

In 2010, total consumption expenditure of Hong Kong residents making personal travel to the Mainland amounted to $34.4 billion.  The average expenditure per person-trip was around $710.  For overnight trips of personal travel to the Mainland, the average expenditure per person-trip was around $990.  That for same-day trips was around $290.

"Statistics on Electronic Products and the Electronics Industry"

Electronic products occupy a prominent position in the import and export trade of Hong Kong.  Statistics on electronic products and the electronics industry have been compiled by C&SD on a regular basis.  In 2010, the value of electronic products imported and exported accounted for 50.8% and 53.8% of the value of Hong Kong's imports and total exports respectively.

This feature article analyses the performance of external trade of electronic products and the electronics industry in Hong Kong as reflected by the external trade statistics and industrial statistics in recent years.  The classifications of electronic products and the electronics industry adopted in compiling such statistics are also discussed.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Trade Analysis Section (1), C&SD (Tel.: 2582 4914).

"The 2009/10-based Consumer Price Indices"

The Consumer Price Indices (CPIs), which reflect the impact of consumer price changes on households, are compiled by combining information on price changes and expenditure patterns.  The expenditure patterns are derived from the results of a Household Expenditure Survey (HES) conducted at five-yearly intervals.

A new round of HES was conducted from October 2009 to September 2010 by C&SD.  With reference to the results of the survey, the expenditure ranges and the weighting patterns of the CPI series have been updated.

After its first release in April 2011, the new 2009/10-based CPI series has replaced the old 2004/05-based series for analysing movements in consumer prices.  This feature article presents the main features of the new CPI series.  It also analyses the expenditure weights and the movements of the new and old CPI series.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Consumer Price Index Section, C&SD (Tel.: 2805 6401).
