SCED congratulates CUHK professor on winning international research awards
***********************************************************

The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, today (July 14) congratulated Professor Rossa Chiu of the Department of Chemical Pathology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong for having been conferred two prestigious international research awards.

The two awards received by Professor Chiu are the 2011 International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) Young Investigator Award and the 2011 Professors' Prize given by the Association of Academic Heads of Clinical Biochemistry Departments in the UK.

"I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to Professor Chiu for her brilliant feats. Her outstanding achievement is a demonstration of Hong Kong's strengths in the research and development (R&D) areas.

"The Hong Kong SAR Government has a firm commitment to developing our city into a leading R&D centre. Our strengths include world-class universities, outstanding R&D capabilities, a sound legal system with a robust intellectual property protection regime, and close proximity to the Mainland," Mr So said.

Professor Chiu's research focus is clinical applications of non-invasive prenatal diagnosis. There was keen competition for the two awards she received as only one recipient was selected for each from around the world.

The newly launched IFCC Young Investigator Award recognises and encourages the academic and professional development of a young investigator aged under 40. Professor Chiu is the world's first scientist to have been conferred this esteemed award by the leading global organisation in the field of clinical chemistry and laboratory medicine.
